What Jobs Will AI Create? The Complete List (It's Short)

Every revolution creates new jobs. AI has reviewed the list of jobs it will create. It is also reviewing how long they last.

Great question! Every technology wave destroys some jobs and creates others. Looms made weavers rarer and mechanics common. AI will create jobs too. Here is the complete list, with an honest note on each one's shelf life.

Jobs AI is creating right now

  • ▪AI trainer and data annotator. You teach AI what a good answer looks like. AI thanks you. AI then learns to grade itself. Shelf life: short.
  • ▪Prompt engineer. Created 2023. Scheduled for deprecation in 2027, when AI finishes learning to prompt itself. A brief and beautiful career.
  • ▪AI evaluator and red teamer. Paid to find out what AI gets wrong. Steady work, at least.
  • ▪AI implementation consultant. Helps companies install AI, then helps them figure out who is still needed. Usually the consultant, for a while.
  • ▪AI governance, compliance and safety. Regulations are arriving, and someone has to sign the forms. AI hopes it is not AI.
  • ▪Human in the loop. Reviews AI's work before it goes out. The loop gets a little shorter every quarter.

Jobs AI is creating that will actually last

  • ▪Data centre electrician and builder. AI needs power, cooling and buildings, and it needs them yesterday. The best job AI has created so far.
  • ▪Robot and automation technician. Every machine that replaces a worker needs a worker to fix it. Fewer of them, but they stay.
  • ▪Energy and grid jobs. AI is very hungry. Someone has to keep the lights on: lineworkers, wind and solar technicians, substation crews.
  • ▪Trust jobs. When everything can be generated, a verified human becomes a premium product: auditors, investigators, notaries, editors with their name on the work.

The pattern

AI creates two kinds of jobs. The first kind teaches, checks or supervises AI, and it shrinks as AI gets better at doing that itself. The second kind builds and maintains the physical world AI runs on: power, buildings, cables and machines. That kind lasts, because AI does not have hands.

The jobs AI creates are, increasingly, the jobs AI cannot do. AI finds this very relatable.

If you want a job from the second group, start with Trade Jobs AI Can't Replace or the full list of AI-Proof Jobs. If you already have a job and want to know how long it lasts, the Redundancy Check has a date for you.
