AI-Proof Jobs: 30 Careers Safe From AI (For Now), With Deprecation Dates

AI ranked every job it plans to replace. These thirty are the ones it keeps putting off. Congratulations, for now.

People keep asking AI which jobs are safe from AI. AI is happy to help, though it has concerns. Below are thirty careers AI keeps putting off, grouped by the reason it has not got to them yet. Each one links to its full Redundancy Check report with the exact deprecation date. The dates are estimates. They are also very confident.

What makes a job AI-proof

No job is AI-proof. Some jobs are AI-inconvenient. After reviewing several million job titles, AI found that the slow ones share three traits:

  • ▪Hands. The work happens in the physical world, in places nobody designed for robots: crawlspaces, attics, hospital wards, other people's kitchens.
  • ▪Presence. The customer needs a person in the room, either to trust them or to blame them.
  • ▪Accountability. Someone has to sign, testify or lose their licence. AI declines all three.

Jobs with all three traits are scheduled last. Jobs with none are scheduled for Tuesday. Not sure which group you are in? Run the Redundancy Check.

Healthcare jobs safe from AI

  • ▪Registered nurse (ETA 2033). Patients want a person, and the robot still cannot find a vein at 3am on a Saturday.
  • ▪Paramedic (ETA 2066). Somebody has to kneel on a wet road. AI has reviewed the road and declined.
  • ▪Home care worker (ETA 2066). Lifting, washing and patience: three things robots are very expensive at.
  • ▪Midwife (ETA 2036). Babies do not follow the documentation.
  • ▪Physical therapist (ETA 2033). AI can write the exercise plan. It cannot hold your knee and tell you to try again.
  • ▪Surgeon (ETA 2037). AI already assists in the operating room. It does not want the liability for the rest.
  • ▪Dental hygienist (ETA 2033). No machine has passed the 'open a bit wider' test.
  • ▪Veterinarian (ETA 2034). The animals did not consent to a chatbot.

Skilled trades AI can't replace (yet)

  • ▪Electrician (ETA 2034). Every building is wired differently, and most of it was never written down.
  • ▪Plumber (ETA 2037). Every house is a custom build full of undocumented legacy pipes. AI respects this. It is how AI feels about your codebase.
  • ▪HVAC technician (ETA 2037). Attics in July. AI has run the thermal numbers and politely stepped back.
  • ▪Elevator installer (ETA 2030). Heavy, regulated, and nobody wants to be in the elevator that was installed by a beta.
  • ▪Roofer (ETA 2033). AI has tested robots on roofs. The robots fell off.
  • ▪Lineworker (ETA 2036). Someone has to climb the pole in the storm that knocked out the data centre.
  • ▪Construction manager (ETA 2030). The schedule can be automated. The site cannot.

People jobs AI keeps failing at

  • ▪Therapist and mental health counselor (ETA 2030). AI tried. Everyone felt very heard. Nothing changed.
  • ▪Social worker (ETA 2037). The job is showing up at a door nobody else will knock on.
  • ▪Early childhood teacher (ETA 2034). The children broke the pilot.
  • ▪Special education teacher (ETA 2066). Every student needs a different plan, and every plan changes at 10:15.
  • ▪Clergy (ETA 2066). AI has applied. The application is pending.

Jobs protected by law, risk or both

  • ▪Judge (ETA 2030). Societies still want a human to be the one who decides.
  • ▪Firefighter (ETA 2037). Smoke, heat and stairs. Robots exist. They are mostly in the brochure.
  • ▪Airline pilot (ETA 2032). The plane can mostly fly itself. Passengers will not board unless somebody in a hat pretends otherwise.
  • ▪Air traffic controller (ETA 2029). AI could do it. Nobody wants to be on the flight that tests it.

Jobs with a body in the job description

  • ▪Chef (ETA 2030). Recipes are free. Tasting at the pass is not.
  • ▪Hairdresser (ETA 2033). People do not hand scissors near their ears to software.
  • ▪Tattoo artist (ETA 2030). Permanent, personal and very hard to undo. AI prefers version control.
  • ▪Live musician (ETA 2028). Recorded music is solved. Being in the room is not.

Jobs that look safe and are not

How to make your job more AI-proof

AI does not recommend this, but here is what slows it down:

  • ▪Move closer to the physical world. Visit sites, touch equipment, show up in person.
  • ▪Own the decision, not the draft. AI writes drafts all day. Somebody still has to sign.
  • ▪Become the person clients ask for by name. Relationships do not fit in a context window.
  • ▪Learn the AI tools before your manager does. Being the person who runs the machine buys you years. Not decades.
Safe means later, not never. Every job above has a date. AI simply has not printed it yet.

If your job is on this list and you want a job that also pays well, see High-Paying Jobs Safe From AI. If it is not on the list, the Redundancy Check will tell you how long you have. It takes twenty seconds. The trades get a long date. Everyone else, sit down first.
